9 recommendations for protecting health in the face of low temperatures

Must Read

Severe cold adversely affects health, although only in severe cases effects such as hypothermia or frostbite occur.

The most common is overstress of the organism, which can lead to organic compensation exacerbating chronic diseases in the population at risk. This is how it is collected in the new National Plan of Preventive Measures for Low Temperatures 2022-2023which is part of the Strategic Plan for Health and Environment (PESMA), prepared by the Ministries of Health and the Environmental Transformation and Demographic Challenge.

In the document, which aims to reduce the impact of cold on the health of the population, it is mentioned that in winter there are also more traffic accidents and falls due to ice sheets, as well as fires and carbon monoxide poisoning from gas stoves. or brass.

In any case, although the Ministry of Health has indicated that the effects of low temperatures do not usually occur in a sharp and sudden manner as in the case of high temperatures, the plan notes that cold is an environmental risk factor that must be taken into account. And its health effects may be even greater than those of extreme heat.

In this context, the document lays out nine general recommendations to avoid the most frequent risk situations.

Tips for low temperatures

  1. Outside, it is more comfortable to breathe through the nose rather than through the mouth, since the air heats up as it passes through the nostrils and thus reduces the cold that reaches the lungs.
  2. Extreme caution in case of snow in the streets. A high percentage of cold-related injuries are associated with falls from slipping on snowboards. If possible, it is recommended to wear non-slip shoes.
  3. It should be noted that several layers of thin clothing protect more than one thick layer, by forming insulating air chambers between them.
  4. If you use the stove at home or in the fireplace, it is recommended to ventilate the room frequently to avoid carbon dioxide buildup. Ventilate the house at least twice a day, for 15 minutes each time, to ensure fresh air.
  5. Don’t take over-the-counter medications, as some can precipitate problems caused by cold exposure.
  6. It is advisable to choose a varied diet and consume fruits daily. Also drink fluids, especially water and hot drinks.
  7. Always stay well informed of the weather forecast before leaving the house.
  8. Although anyone can suffer from a problem related to low temperatures, extra attention should be paid to people who may be susceptible to catching a cold. If necessary, contact a health professional.
  9. Influenza vaccination is recommended for people over 65 years of age who suffer from chronic diseases (heart, lung, metabolic and immunodeficiency diseases).
