A magnitude 6.0 earthquake shook the northwestern island of New Zealand on Monday, with no tsunami alert issued.

The quake struck at 7:37 am (local time) 193 km northeast of Gisborne, a city of about 37,000 people.
The epicenter was reported below the Pacific Ocean floor, at a depth of 10 km, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). For its part, the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (CSEM) estimates the depth to be 40 kilometers.
