Marlinspike stresses that he remains surprised when many media continue to define Telegram as “encrypted messaging,” because for him, “there is no worse option in terms of privacy and data collection.”
The founder of Signal explained on Twitter that Telegram does not use end-to-end encryption by default (e2ee), but offers the ability to create “secret conversations”, which use the “questionable” e2ee protocol, even which Facebook Messenger has better.

It also states that the information it collects from the user (groups, multimedia files, sent and received messages) is stored in plain text on servers, which states that it can be verified by installing the application on a new mobile device and registering the number from the phone.
In this test, the user will “immediately” see the conversation history, contacts, multimedia files shared in chats and groups, because all this information is on the servers, in plain text.

“The point of an ‘encrypted messenger’ should be that you don’t have to trust anyone other than the people you’re communicating with”Marlinspike points out. He insists that “the message you send should be visible only to you and the recipient,” and the same should apply to group details. “Searching for your contacts should not be disclosed to anyone else”.
Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov, who did not directly refer to Marlinspike, on Tuesday shared the findings of an FBI report on messaging ‘apps’ through which encrypted services such as WhatsApp were collected. Sharing user data with third parties while Telegram “is one of the few messaging apps that does not violate the trust of its users.”
