Sydney (Australia), March 14 (EFE) .- The New Zealand government on Monday slashed taxes on fuel and public transportation, raising the cost of living in the maritime country as a result of the energy crisis. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“The global energy crisis is rapidly escalating, which is why the government is proposing to reduce fuel taxes,” Prime Minister Jacinta Artern said in a statement.
Over the next three months, fuel taxes and tolls of NZ $ 0.25 ($ 0.17 or € 0.15) per liter will be reduced, saving about NZ $ 11 ($ 7.46) or 6.84 euros to fill a 40-liter tank, the official said.
Similarly, the government will halve public transport fares over the same period as part of a relief package in response to rising costs of living, including increases in family subsidies and contributions to pension funds.
“We can not control the war in Ukraine or the continuing fluctuations in fuel prices, but we can reduce the impact on New Zealand families,” Ardern stressed.
According to New Zealand Finance Minister Grant Roberson, the price of the 91st petrol, widely used by his comrades, has risen by 15 per cent since the beginning of the year to last week, largely due to the conflict in Ukraine.
