Breast cancer mortality decreased by 42% between 1989 and 2019 as a result of early detection through increased awareness and mammography, as well as advances in treatments. However, about 43,250 women will die from the disease in 2022. The American Cancer Society estimates that 31,720 women in California will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and 4,690 will die from the disease. A recent ACS study showed that in 2020, during the first year of the COVID pandemic, there was a six percent decrease in the number of women who reported having undergone breast cancer screening in the last year compared to 2018. This equates to more than fewer women being tested by 2 million women in the United States in 2020.
