Between pop art and surrealism in this amazing dream house. The union of artist Philip Colbert and writer and director Charlotte Colbert takes the form of a lobster and a giant belly. “It’s a home for dreamers.” This is the contemporary surrealist couple’s answer to the question: What is Maison Colbert really? Private home, art gallery, or artist studio? “We decided to create a living workspace, with an area designed both for our creative practices and for the experience as a home. There are lobster busts made of noble-looking marble in the living room and a sexy womb-shaped headboard in one bedroom with a fallopian theme.” Us command to create real works of art. The works we—like the ones we just mentioned—we’re launching through a limited-edition collection called MaisonColbert,” they both tell us.
But let’s go home, to the love nest of a dreamy couple. Hidden behind a Victorian shop front, in one of the maze alleys of Spitalfields, East London, This dream house is a true urban wonderland —Over 500 square meters — seduces with its sensual appeal. Here, in fact, we find his entire abstract and surreal world on display. Some examples are the bathtub covered with 108 silicone breasts and the huge marble coffee table with the eye symbol included. “My character at home is played by lobster,” says Philip. “Charlotte’s fallopian tubes and eyeballs pop from room to room in bold ways.”
The idea for the project was made possible by the collaboration of a friend and local architect, Chris Dyson, who, in collaboration with designers at Buchanan Studio, brought the dream of Charlotte and Philip Colbert to life. The work certainly wasn’t easy, but it was so much fun,” Buchanan Studio designers say. “Since our first meeting with Philip and Charlotte, we were immediately excited and inspired to start this project. There were no standards or rules to follow, creativity was the real hero. We wanted the design to be original and robust, but at the same time, the house had to be a haven of peace for our clients. “Of course, there was already an emphasis on art and visual identities, so Buchanan Studio set out to design a space that could reflect these two artists together.
