Women’s National Team beat New Zealand 2-0 Second win for Portanova in FIFA history

Argentina’s women’s soccer team scored another impressive win in Hamilton early on Monday, beating New Zealand 2-0 in one of three friendlies to be played during the FIFA dates in February. Mariana Laroquet and Aldana Cometti scored for Germany’s Portanova as they beat Chile 4-0 in their first match in Oceania last week.

After great play from Lorena Benitez, the Argentine pressured a defender and scored on a rebound 17 minutes into the first half. With the advantage, the Albiceleste dominated the build-up and the game ended with Cometti’s header from Yamila Rodriguez’s corner from the right.

“It was a very tough game. We tried to play evenly, we tried to find gaps and luckily we came away with the win,” Vanina Correa, the national team’s goalkeeper and captain, explained after the game. “We are trying to get the World Cup in the best possible way. We have to keep working to reach our level of play when we face the group stage,” Correa concluded the statements collected by Argentina’s official account.

After a win against Chile and today’s victory over New Zealand, Portanova’s side close their tour next Thursday, again against New Zealand, in a quest to improve their preparation for the World Cup. The Portanova-directed selection will combine Group G with Italy, Sweden and South Africa, while New Zealand – one of the home teams at the 2023 World Cup – will share Group A with Norway, the Philippines and Switzerland.
