right-handed pitcher for Houston Astros manager Lance McCullers Jr. said he will miss Opening Day for the World Series champions due to a pulled muscle in his arm.
McCullers, who was sidelined for the first four-and-a-half months of last season while rehabbing a right heel flexor strain, noticed soreness after a bullpen session last week.
They did an MRI on Tuesday night. He told reporters on Wednesday that he showed no structural damage to his elbow but would delay his start.
“I was a little upset,” he said. “I was looking forward to a great start to camp and a great start to the season.”
McCullers, 29, described the injury as a “small muscle strain.”
“It will set me back a little bit, but it shouldn’t be like last year,” he said. “It should be something I hope to play in a couple of weeks.”
He said preparing for opening day was “out of the question”.
“Given the nature of the build during the spring and the number of bullpens that you need and then the games obviously, the smart thing to do is go at a slow pace and then come back and continue to have the ability to show the majority of the players the entire season.”
McCullers missed the 2019 season after Tommy John surgery. He went 13-5 with a 3.16 ERA in 2021, then was hit in the postseason.
He had signed a five-year, $85 million deal prior to the 2021 season. McCullers has started eight games since August 13 of last year and has gone 0-1 in three post-season outings.
