What can motivate an athlete over the many years of his career? Novak Djokovic knows that: history. The Serbian appears at Roland Garros as one of the resolute favorites to win the title after the absence of Rafael Nadal, with the added incentive provided by the idea of leaving Paris as the tennis player with the most Grand Slam titles in tennis history.
“The desire is still there but things can change quickly. I’m 36 and have been a professional for 20 years. I don’t see age as a deciding factor, I pay attention to my general condition and enjoy it. History is at stake, as it has been for the past five seasons. In almost every tournament I think “now I can make or break this record”. I’ve broken a lot but there are still things that motivate me to keep going.”said with an open heart in a conversation with the press at a preview of the French Open premiere.
“That’s one of the reasons why I keep competing. At this level you need clear goals and a pattern to follow to achieve them. That attitude got me here. However, on the other side, the new generation is coming so we’ll see until I feel like it,” added the Belgrade-born man. Keep fighting.”
Finally, explaining that he was fit to start his tournament career and that despite Rafael Nadal’s dominance over the past 18 years, he has been responsible for two wins, he commented: “When a major tournament is approaching, I feel more relaxed than any other. I have mentally educated myself to focus on the major championships. They are my priority at the moment, apart from the competition for Serbia, so winning any event other than the Grand Slam is kind of a bonus for me.”
