German police announced, on Wednesday, the death of a 15-year-old from Berlin who was seriously injured by a player from the French club Metz during a fight after an international tournament in Frankfurt.
“After the fight on Sunday (…) the 15-year-old died in hospital from serious brain injuries,” German police said in a statement. Frankfurt police, who are continuing their investigation, said the 16-year-old suspected of carrying out the fatal blows remained in provisional detention.
The suspect is part of a training program for Metz, which plays in the second division. He added, “To clarify the circumstances (of the death of the German youth), an autopsy will be carried out in the coming days.” The deceased young man, part of the German GFC Berlin team, was kept alive artificially so that he could donate his organs, spokeswoman for the Frankfurt Public Prosecutor’s Office, Nadja Nessen, told AFP. The tournament in which the two young men participated was hosted by clubs from 16 different countries, mostly European.
