The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, announced that he will demand more climate action from the member states of the Group of Twenty during his participation in the summit of the bloc, which is based in New Delhi, India.
In remarks to the press upon his arrival, the UN Secretary-General stressed that his message would be a “simple but urgent appeal” to the world leaders present to unite in the face of the greatest challenges facing humanity.
He said global leadership is particularly needed in two areas: climate action and sustainable development.
He stressed that the G-20 includes the main producers of greenhouse gases in the world, responsible for 80 percent of total global emissions, and therefore they must make more efforts in climate action.
“Leadership means keeping the 1.5 degree target alive; rebuilding trust based on climate justice; and advancing a just and equitable transition towards a green economy,” he stressed.
As a proposal, the Secretary-General announced a roadmap for members, which includes financing the Goals’ incentives of at least $500 billion and establishing effective debt relief for the poorest countries.
In addition, it will propose a change in the business model of multilateral development banks to promote private financing on a much larger scale, as well as redirecting fossil fuel subsidies towards more productive uses.
Guterres reminded the media that the world is going through a difficult transitional moment, facing increasing inequality, levels of poverty and hunger, and at the same time, a clear lack of global solidarity.
“Divisions grow, tensions deepen, and trust erodes, all of which raise the specter of fragmentation and, ultimately, confrontation. “This fracture would be deeply troubling at best, but in our time it is synonymous with disaster.”
India is the third stop for the head of the United Nations this month, after its previous participation in the African Climate Summit in Kenya, and the ASEAN-United Nations summit in Indonesia.
The G20 meeting this weekend will precede a meeting Group of 77 and ChinaHe will be based in Havana next week, Guterres’ last stop before the high-level segment of the United Nations.
