The first of these bodies warned, in a statement it made during the Road Safety Forum held in this capital, of an increase in child deaths as a result of road accidents by 11 percent during the year 2023.
In the case of men, more losses of life were reported due to traffic accidents than from respiratory or cardiovascular diseases, commented the comptroller general in charge, Carlos Zuloaga.
For his part, Director of the National Institute of Forensic Medicine, Jorge Jiménez, drew attention to the situation in the country, which in 2022 recorded 8,470 deaths resulting from these road accidents.
He pointed out that there are a large number of deaths of minors due to motorcycles.
He stated that half of the deaths in traffic accidents are due to motorcyclists, because 40 percent of them lose their lives when colliding with fixed objects.
In addition to more than 6,500 deaths reported from this cause as of last October, coroners reported 24,000 injuries due to transportation accidents across the country.
To confront this situation, the Comptroller General in charge recommended strengthening public policies and enhancing cooperation between the various entities linked to the phenomenon.
