Gasly believes the Alpine F1 team was right to change its concept.

The French driver stressed that he understood his team’s decision to completely revamp its car concept for the 2024 Formula One season after a disappointing start to the season until the summer break. Before making this technical change in recent months, Alpine had chosen not to continue developing the A523 ideas in an attempt to open up a new path that would provide more room for improvement with the current car.

After finishing fourth in the Constructors’ Championship in 2022, they dropped to sixth last year, but half a year later they are now eighth after adding just 11 points, and Pierre Gasly still believes the decision taken in the spur of the moment was justified: “I think it’s about performance.”

“Last year, the team indicated that they had reached the end of the concept development,” he told Motorsport.com. “Because we weren’t achieving our targets, they asked themselves: ‘Do we want to have another year where we know we might be stuck in the same situation?’ They said they wanted more, so they were going to try something else. I think it was the right decision. We’re not in Formula 1 to be content with sixth place in the constructors’ championship.

The French team’s hopes have been dashed and, for now, even Haas F1’s seventh place looks illusory. However, its driver has done the work at Enstone and has room for improvement to do so in the coming months, above all, to get a more solid base for 2025.

“Unfortunately, it didn’t come to fruition with the directions that you know were already taken with the concept of the car that we have now, but, nevertheless, I still think the team’s performance is at a better level than when I arrived,” he explained. “So it’s about bringing that performance to the car, which is not easy, but I know that we already have good directions for next season, which will put us in a better place with the progress and the people and what they have built.” And I keep working, I can tell that there will be something good that will come out of it.
