The working class past Italian photographer Tina Modotti He honed his unique perspective on Mexico's poor in the 1920s and created a revolutionary work that is on display at the Jeu de Paume Museum in Paris. The exhibition of 240 black-and-white photographs, which runs until May, covers five stages in the life of the artist, born in Udine in 1896.
In 1913, Modotti immigrated to the United States, where he worked in a textile factory. She later became a model and actress, before partnering with photographer Edward Weston, who gave her her first camera.
“Eye of the Revolution” “reveals Modotti’s great modernism, whether in still lifes, architectural photographs or portraits,” says exhibition curator Isabel Tejeda Martin.
During his years in Mexico, he documented the work of artists such as José Clemente Orozco and Diego Rivera, whose wife, Frida Kahlo, he befriended. Modotti's photographs appeared in many communist publications.
After joining the Communist Party in 1927, he joined the International Red Relief (the Communist equivalent of the Red Cross) and collaborated with the Sickle newspaper targeting the peasant population. Modotti was expelled from Mexico after being wrongly accused of being part of an attack against President Pascual Ortiz Rubio, but she was able to return to the country, where she died in 1942.
