Bassett, twice nominated for the famous Academy Awards, will receive in November at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles a golden statuette for her contribution to the entity and her talent, bolstered by films such as “Malcolm X” (1992) or “What’s Love Got to Do With It” (1993), She received her first Academy Award nomination for her role as Tina Turner.
The actress will be accompanied at the award ceremony by screenwriter, actor, producer and director Brooks, who specializes in the comedy genre.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Monday that the 96-year-old actress, along with film editor Carol Littleton, will receive an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards.
Other filmmakers will also be in attendance at the honorary awards ceremony, including Michelle Sater, Director and Founder of Artists Programs at the Sundance Institute, who will also receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in a non-televised presentation.
“The Academy Board is pleased to honor four pioneers who have changed the motion picture industry and inspired generations,” said Academy President Janet Yang.
For the most part, the winners of these franchises haven’t won competitive Oscars yet, but Brooks’ “Young Frankenstein” (1974) is the exception, since he won the statuette for the original screenplay for “The Producers.” (The Producers 1967).
Honorary awards are given for outstanding lifetime achievement and exceptional contribution to the arts and sciences of motion pictures, or for outstanding service to the Academy.
