Apple has long denied the benefit of having its laptops have touch screens, claiming that it wants each product to stand out at what it does best. Personally, I see them as useless unless they are transferable. Having to clean my laptop screen every two-by-three doesn’t convince me, especially for a pure work environment. I do not deny that it can have some benefits in certain scenarios, but I would prefer a clean screen over a touch screen. Obviously, the company will consider a complete turnaround in this area because it will allegedly be “actively” adding touch screens to Macs.
It is true that iOS and macOS are one step away from being the same operating system, especially when iPhone, iPad and Mac use the same type of ARM processor. But from there to Apple, going back to what it’s said for fifteen years is something that won’t go unnoticed if it eventually does. Steve Jobs was very clear about this in 2010, and he didn’t feel comfortable using a laptop as he would a tablet. Imagine having to raise your arm all the time to interact with the screen. It would be bad on a MacBook, but on an iMac it would be even worse.
The change will come from adding OLED displays to Macs, making it easier for them to be touch-sensitive, as some iPads are. What Mark Gurman, a Bloomberg journalist and generally reliable source of information about Apple, said, verbatim -With they mistakes-, that “the company is seriously considering producing touch screens for Macs.” But he has his back “The launch is not finalized and plans can change.” I see it as more of a headline to get attention than something that’s actually going to happen.
