Archaeological discoveries that affected the world in 2023

Must Read

ATHENS, December 24 – There have been relevant discoveries in the field of archaeology this year, such as the discovery of ancient Greek catacombs found in southern Italy, in Naples.

More evidence has also been uncovered about an ancient temple, now underwater, in a sunken city off the coast of Egypt, according to the Artnews portal.

Some of the most interesting finds may have involved innovative technology that allowed archaeologists to dig deeper, but others are linked to current events, including the ancient Greek city of Cyrene, which emerged after floods in Libya.

Some early settlements, such as a Neolithic monument and a mysterious sanctuary on the Scottish Isle of Arran and the Dutch town of Teal, respectively, have also been identified in 2023, providing a deeper understanding of their ancient societies.

Treasures of cultural significance have also been uncovered, such as a three-thousand-year-old sealed passage in a massive temple complex in Chavín, Peru; Sixty mummified bodies were found in two cemeteries in the ancient Egyptian city of Luxor.

Although it is not a discovery, the Vatican was shocked by reopening an ancient Roman cemetery to the public. (Text and photo: PL)
