As part of the build-up to the 2023 Australia/New Zealand World Cup, the Argentina national team will have the opportunity to travel to Maori lands for the first FIFA date next year.

La Albiceleste will be the team invited in the window associated with the play-off in New Zealand in February. The group stage of the World Cup begins in July with Argentina playing in Auckland/Tamagui Makarao and Hamilton/Kirikiroa from the 17th to the 23rd of that month.

On Monday, February 20 and Thursday, February 23, German Portanova’s team will face the locals. Additionally, on February 17 they will play against one of the teams selected for the play-offs.

New Zealand will be one of the home teams at the 2023 World Cup and will be aiming to show its best side in Group A, where it will share Norway, the Philippines and Switzerland. The “Soccer Ferns” currently sit 22nd in the FIFA rankings, seven places ahead of Argentina. They have faced South Korea in their last two games, losing the first game at least and drawing 1-1 in the second game.

The record against Argentina is brief: the two teams have met four times. In March 2000, New Zealand traveled to Buenos Aires to play two friendlies: the Albiceleste won the first match 2–1 and the second ended in a 1–1 draw. They met again in 2008 in a friendly cup played in Suwon, South Korea, where the “Ferns” won 1-0. The most recent precedent is from March 2019: at the Nations Cup in Australia, where New Zealand won 2-0.
