Argentina’s rugby sevens team, Las Pumas ‘7, defeated Samoa today and lost both times to Fiji 26-19, to play against New Zealand tonight in the quarter-finals of the Hong Kong Sevens. Special round organized by World Rugby (WR).
Argentina beat Canada 17-7 in their debut game yesterday, adding 7 points against Fiji’s 9, ahead of Samoa with 5 and Canada with 3. They will face the group leaders All Blacks tonight at 11:02pm.
Santiago Gomes Cora’s side, second this season, beat Samoa with tries from Marcos Moneta (2), Santiago Alvarez, a try and conversion from Luciano Gonzalez and Gaston Reval with a conversion.
Later, in a match that would decide the winner of the group, the Pumas 7s were defeated by Fiji goals from Rodrigo Isgro, German Schulz and Madias Osatsuk, Luciano Gonzalez and another from Santiago Vera Feld.
In other group results, Fiji, who will play South Africa in the quarter-finals, defeated Samoa 12-7 and Canada 40-7, while Samoa beat Canada 29-5.
New Zealand leads the world tour with 120 points, followed by Argentina, who won seven in Hamilton and Vancouver, on 108, France on 95 and Fiji and Australia on 94.
The top four in the table will qualify directly for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games along with host France.
