Students and members of Argentine organizations remain on August 31 outside the home of Vice President Cristina Fernandez in the capital’s Recoleta neighborhood, which is also under police surveillance.
For the 10th day in a row, citizens are taking to the perimeter of the building where the former president is located to express their support after Attorney General Diego Luciani asked for 12 years in prison for the president of the Senate and stripped him of his public office.
President Alberto Fernandez and several ministers, officials, legislators and human rights organizations denounced the judicial persecution he was subjected to, as well as the violence inflicted by the city’s police against protesters in favor of the Vice President.
The day before, controversial, administrative and tax judge Roberto Gallardo issued a ruling forbidding the capital’s authorities from placing fences near the former head of state’s home and ordering that the tasks of looking after its security be left to federal officials. ..
However, the head of the government of Buenos Aires, Horacio Rodríguez Laretta, refused to comply with Gallardo’s rulings and filed an appeal to have him removed from the case.
He also confirmed that no official of his will would participate in a session to analyze what happened, which was later suspended.
Last night, the Vice President described the repression against those who came to support her as incomprehensible and denounced the opposition’s provocations such as the laying of two trucks with stones a block and a half from her house.
They are not rational people. Installing fences in a huge space is inexplicable. We have to rethink the theme of this city, the capital of all Argentines, whose streets have been suddenly taken over by the political police. He noted that we must rethink the functioning of the jurisdiction and the role of the federal government here.
He added, “I want to continue to live under a republican, representative, federal and democratic system, where the authorities are elected by the people in free, democratic and unrestricted elections every four years.”
