North Dakota high school association gives sports the green light for a fall season as scheduled – INFORUM

VALLEY CITY, N.D. During a time of cancellations, postponements and alterations to seasons in the sports world due to the coronavirus pandemic, the North Dakota High School Activities Association had some good news for athletes, families and coaches in North Dakota hoping to return to athletic competition this fall. The NDHSAA Board of Directors gave the go ahead for all fall sports and activities during a video conference Thursday, July 16, unanimously approving to go on with the fall season as planned.
The board plans to host all fall sports on its previously approved calendar at this time, leaving the decision to participate up to each individual school district. The motion made Thursday gives high school sports the green light to go forward with local control for schools to decide if they want to play or not, granting that authority for them to do so.
School boards and local public health units will determine if its schools will sponsor sports and activities, the NDHSAA said.
However, any plan, schedule or procedure may be modified as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.
With member schools having the option to provide in-person education for students, the NDHSAA believes it is important those schools also have the option to return to physical activity and competition, NDHSAA Executive Director Matt Fetsch said.
Thursday’s video conference came two days after North Dakota officials announced guidelines for reopening K-12 schools this fall.
Local school districts have the power to decide whether to hold in-person classes, offer virtual instruction or take a hybrid approach depending on decisions made by local school boards and COVID-19 conditions in each district, Gov. Doug Burgum said at a press conference Tuesday, July 14.
Everyone’s health and safety is paramount in moving forward with activities and it will not come without disruption, however, providing these opportunities is essential to the physical and mental well-being of high school students,” Fetsch said.
Boys soccer is the first fall sport to start with practices set to begin Aug. 3 and the first competition date slated for Aug. 14.
Football, boys tennis, Class A girls golf, and boys and girls cross country are set to report to their first fall practices Aug. 10.
The role that sports and activities play in the lives of our youth is extremely important, NDHSAA Board President Travis Jordan said. Our students need connection now more than ever and the decision today grants yet another vehicle for that to occur.
The news comes amidst a rise in active cases in the state, which has seen a surge in COVID-19 infections over the last few weeks. North Dakota recorded a pandemic-high of 720 active cases Tuesday, July 14. More than 700 North Dakota residents are currently infected with the illness.
The high school association and NDHSAA Board said they will continue to work closely with North Dakota health and public instruction officials, as well as the governors office, as the upcoming school year approaches.
It’ll be vital moving forward that the NDHSAA and its Board of Directors continues to monitor information and guidance from these groups, Jordan said.
The NDHSAA Board President said ensuring the safety of the state’s student-athletes, coaches and advisors is a top priority.
Guidelines for a return to competition will be shared with member schools late next week.
The Return to Competition Committee will meet next week, Friday, July 24, where the board will receive a draft of guidelines for the fall sports season, which will need to be approved to move on schedule.
The high school associations in Utah, Pennsylvania and Ohio have also given the go ahead for fall sports and activities to move forward as originally scheduled.
The NDHSAA suspended all winter and spring sports activities March 13, two days before Gov. Burgum ordered schools to close due to COVID-19.

Brie Larson Is Going On The Animal Crossing Talk Show And Has Shown Off Her Island – GameSpot

Brie Larson is famous for her movie roles, which include Captain Marvel, Scott Pilgrim, and an Oscar-winning turn in Room, but she’s also famous for being a huge Nintendo fan. Consequently, Gary Whitta, who has started his own talk show hosted inside Animal Crossing: New Horizons (it’s called Animal Talking), says that Brie is the show’s most-requested guest.
And now it’s happening–Brie Larson is coming to Animal Talking for the July 23 episode. She’ll join streamers Dr Lupo and Friskk, as well as musician Kenny Fong.
Don’t say I never do anything for you people.Next week’s ANIMAL TALKING headliner is the most-requested guest in the show’s history – the marvelous @brielarson! And the rest ain’t no scrubs either. @DrLupo! @Friskkmkay! And live music from Kenny Fong! See you next Thursday! pic.twitter.com/qEPK7mVSbJ
Gary Whitta (@garywhitta) July 15, 2020
If you want to see Larson’s island, though, you won’t have to wait–Brie Larson has also released a 17-minute video of her starting her Animal Crossing journey on her recently started YouTube channel. You can watch below, but since she’s just starting, there’s very little on the island just yet–perhaps by the time she goes on Animal Talking she’ll have built her island up more.
It’s not quite as good as Danny Trejo’s island yet, but give her time.
Brie will be arguably the second most exciting guest to feature on the show, after GameSpot’s own Chastity Vincencio. Host Gary Whitta, meanwhile, had his own exciting news recently. The writer, who is famous for writing Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, is working on a “big” new movie.
GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

Scientists Accidentally Bred the Fish Version of a Liger – The New York Times

Many aspects of their anatomy and physiology are actually very similar, said Dennis Scarnecchia, professor of fishery resources at the University of Idaho. Both species have scaleless skin, spiral valve intestines and cartilaginous endoskeletons.
Although it seems unlikely that two species would have so much in common after spending ages evolving independently, 184 million years isnt actually that long for these fish.
These living fossil fishes have extremely slow evolutionary rates, so what might seem like a long time to us isnt quite as long of a time to them, Dr. David said.
Although Dr. Mozsár and his colleagues plan to continue caring for the hybrids they created, they have no plans to make more. The researchers suspect that sturddlefish, like ligers, mules and so many other human-made hybrids, are sterile, so they have no value for caviar production. The creation of more sturddlefish could also imperil wild fish populations.
Nevertheless, the sturddlefish has captured the imaginations of scientists around the world.
I think its pretty cool that these living fossils can still surprise us, Dr. David said.

Macy’s doled out $9 million in bonuses to top execs after thousands of jobs are cut – CNBC

Macy’s doled out $9 million in equity awards to six top executives days after it laid off roughly a quarter of its corporate workforce.
The ailing department store chain’s CEO, Jeff Gennette, received restricted stock worth $3.7 million on July 9, according to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The five other execs, including legal chief Elisa Garcia and human resources chief Danielle Kirgan, received awards ranging from $350,000 to $3 million, the filings said.
A representative from Macy’s said in an email that because of the pandemic, the retailer delayed the timing of its annual equity grants to management and the board this year. She said the company will describe its 2020 compensation plans in more depth in its 2021 proxy filing.
In February, before the Covid-19 virus outbreak was declared a global pandemic, Macy’s announced plans to close 125 stores permanently over three years as it slashed 2,000 corporate jobs. Then on June 25, Macy’s said it will cut another 3,900 corporate jobs or 3% of its total workforce at that time to reduce costs.
Macy’s has also said it is still evaluating closing more stores, over a faster timeline due to the impact it has felt from the loss of revenue during the pandemic.
Macy’s shares have fallen nearly 60% this year. It has a market cap of $2.2 million.
It isn’t the only department store chain struggling, either. Several have been pushed into bankruptcy court: Neiman Marcus, J.C. Penney and Stage Stores. Nordstrom also is shuttering more than a dozen stores for good this year.
Gennette had temporarily taken a pay cut during the pandemic, beginning back in April. But that was also recently reversed on July 1 for Gennette and other top Macy’s execs, according to an SEC filing.
Bloomberg first reported on the filings Thursday morning.

Allegheny County reports 140 new coronavirus cases; health officials reviewing restrictions – TribLIVE

TribLIVE’s Daily and Weekly email newsletters deliver the news you want and information you need, right to your inbox.
Reported coronavirus cases in Allegheny County dropped Thursday for the second day in a row after hitting a record earlier this week.
The county on Thursday reported 140 new coronavirus cases, 12 new hospitalizations and one death.
The county had its highest reported number Tuesday with 331, followed by 246 on Wednesday.
With 2,817 test results, the positivity rate for the new cases is 5%.
The new cases range from patients age 2 to 94 with a median age of 33. Positive test results span from June 30 to July 14.
Overall, 86,561 people have been tested in Allegheny County. Of those, 5,750 are confirmed or probable. The county has reported 205 deaths.
There have been 490 cases requiring hospitalization, with 170 admitted to the intensive care unit and 79 requiring mechanical ventilation.
On Wednesday, Gov. Tom Wolf ordered more restrictions on Pennsylvania bars and restaurants, effective Thursday, in response to what he characterized as an “unsettling climb” of covid-19 cases in the state. The actions Wolf enacted with the order limit bars and restaurants to 25% of their indoor capacity, a decrease from the 50% that had been permitted.
Allegheny County banned indoor dining earlier this month.
On Thursday afternoon, county officials said the health department was reviewing its restrictions. Officials reiterated that the county is permitted to enact more restrictive policies than the state’s but not less.
Health department Director Dr Debra Bogen will review the July 8 order and announce any changes on Friday, officials said.
The county restrictions include:
• Indoor dining or alcohol consumption at bars, restaurants or any other business establishments is prohibited;
• Indoor areas, including bars, of restaurants and retail food service businesses must be closed except for through-traffic;
• Customers are subject to a three-drink maximum for dine-in service at outdoor seating areas;
• Dine-in service at outdoor seating is permitted until 11:00 p.m.;
• Gatherings of more than 50 people outdoors is prohibited.

WHO, UNICEF warn coronavirus is causing widespread disruptions to global immunization programs for children – Fox News

The World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF on Wednesday warned of widespread disruptions to global immunization programs for children due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“The likelihood that a child born today will be fully vaccinated with all the globally recommended vaccines by the time she reaches the age of 5 is less than 20 percent,” according to a UNICEF news release.
These disruptions threaten to interrupt progress made in reaching more kids with a wider range of vaccines, officials say.
FLYING CROSS COUNTRY AMID CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC FOR HEART SURGERY: ONE PATIENT’S SUCCESS STORY
Three quarters of 82 countries surveyed in May reported disrupted vaccination campaigns due to coronavirus, according to a study carried out by UNICEF, WHO and Gavi. (iStock)
About 75 percent of 82 countries surveyed in May reported disrupted vaccination campaigns due to coronavirus, according to the study carried out by UNICEF, WHO and Gavi, a public-private partnership started by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation that buys vaccines for about 60 percent of the world’s children.
The disruptions in immunization services are largely due to the low supply of personal protective equipment (PPE) for health workers, travel restrictions and low availability of health workers as focus shifted to COVID-19 response.
Officials said, due to the pandemic, at least 30 measles vaccination campaigns faced a risk of cancellation, “which could result in further outbreaks in 2020 and beyond.”
CORONAVIRUS KILLS OHIO ARMY VET WHO REFUSED TO WEAR FACE MASK
Countries like Brazil, Bolivia, Haiti and Venezuela are facing “moderate to severe COVID-19-related disruptions,” where “immunization coverage plummeted by at least 14 percentage points since 2010.”
“The avoidable suffering and death caused by children missing out on routine immunizations could be far greater than COVID-19 itself,” said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO director-general, calling on countries to ensure programs continue.
“We cannot trade one health crisis for another,” said Henrietta Fore, UNICEF executive director.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Bidet company wants naming rights to Bills’ stadium – WBEN

It was jointly announced on Wednesday by the Buffalo Bills and New Era Company that New Era had asked the team for its release from their naming rights and sponsorship deals with the team. New Era originally brought the naming rights to the stadium back in August of 2016 and had reportedly signed a seven-year, $35 million deal to hold those rights.
Now that the naming rights to the stadium in Orchard Park, New York are up for grabs, one company has already made its pitch to purchase the naming rights, whether it’s a legitimate PR move or just a publicity stunt.
The bidet company TUSHY has made an offer of $12.5 million for the naming rights to the Bills’ stadium and name the facility, “TUSHY Stadium.”
In a statement from TUSHY communications director Chris Doughtey, they say that the company is offering to deploy portable toilets equipped with its bidets across parking lots and tailgating venues around the stadium for every home game for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. However, it is still unclear as to whether or not there will be any fans in attendance for Bills games this season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition, the statement says that the company is looking to bring a college football game to the stadium and host the first-ever “Toilet Bowl.”

TUSHY is a New York-based company that provides bidet attachments that “transforms any traditional toilet into a booty wonderland.”
The stadium in Orchard Park opened in 1973 and had been called Rich Stadium for 25 years before it became Ralph Wilson Stadium in 1998.

New BlackRock Android malware can steal passwords and card data from 337 apps – ZDNet

Image: ThreatFabric
A new Android malware strain has emerged in the criminal underworld that comes equipped with a wide range of data theft capabilities allowing it to target a whopping 337 Android applications.
Named BlackRock, this new threat emerged in May this year and was discovered from mobile security firm ThreatFabric.
Researchers say the malware was based on the leaked source code of another malware strain (Xerxes, based itself on other malware strains) but was enhanced with additional features, especially on the side that deals with the theft of user passwords and credit card information.
Image: ThreatFabric
BlackRock still works like most Android banking trojans, though, except it targets more apps than most of its predecessors.
The trojan will steal both login credentials (username and passwords), where available, but also prompt the victim to enter payment card details if the apps support financial transactions.
Per ThreatFabric, the data collection takes place via a technique called “overlays,” which consists of detecting when a user tries to interact with a legitimate app and showing a fake window on top that collects the victim’s login details and card data before allowing the user to enter the intended legitimate app.
In a report shared with ZDNet this week prior to publication, ThreatFabric researchers say the vast majority of BlackRock overlays are geared towards phishing financial and social media/communications apps. However, there are also overlays included for phishing data from dating, news, shopping, lifestyle, and productivity apps. The full list of targeted apps is included in the BlackRock report.
Image: ThreatFabric
To show the overlays, BlackRock isn’t that unique, and, under the hood, BlackRock works like most Android malware these days and uses old, tried, and tested techniques.
Once installed on a device, a malicious app tainted with the BlackRock trojan asks the user to grant it access to the phone’s Accessibility feature.
The Android Accessibility feature is one of the operating system’s most powerful feature, as it can be used to automate tasks and even perform taps on the user’s behalf.
BlackRock uses the Accessibility feature to grant itself access to other Android permissions and then uses an Android DPC (device policy controller, aka a work profile) to give itself admin access to the device.
It then uses this access to show the malicious overlays, but ThreatFabric says the trojan can also perform other intrusive operations, such as:

  • Intercept SMS messages
  • Perform SMS floods
  • Spam contacts with predefined SMS
  • Start specific apps
  • Log key taps (keylogger functionality)
  • Show custom push notifications
  • Sabotage mobile antivirus apps, and more

Currently, BlackRock is distributed disguised as fake Google update packages offered on third-party sites, and the trojan hasn’t yet been spotted on the official Play Store.
However, Android malware gangs have usually found ways to bypass Google’s app review process in the past, and at one point or another, we’ll most likely see BlackRock deployed in the Play Store.

NASA and ESA to reveal closest images ever taken of the sun – CBS News

NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) are releasing new images of the sun Thursday morning, bringing humans closer to our host star than ever before. The photos are the first captured by the Solar Orbiter, which launched earlier this year.
After launching on February 9, Solar Orbiter made its first close pass of the sun in mid-June, despite the team facing setbacks due to the coronavirus pandemic. As it passed the sun, it turned on all 10 of its instruments together for the first time, the agencies said in a statement.
The agencies said the new photos are the closest ever taken of the sun. They will be released Thursday morning at 8 a.m. EDT.
“The first images are exceeding our expectations,” Daniel Müller, Solar Orbiter Project Scientist at ESA, said in a statement. “We can already see hints of very interesting phenomena that we have not been able to observe in detail before. The 10 instruments on board Solar Orbiter work beautifully, and together provide a holistic view of the Sun and the solar wind. This makes us confident that Solar Orbiter will help us answer profound open questions about the Sun.”
ESA/NASA’s Solar Orbiter is returning its first science data, including images of the Sun taken from closer than any spacecraft in history.
ESA/ATG Medialab
During its first orbit, Solar Orbiter got within 47 million miles of the star’s surface — about half the distance between the sun and the Earth. ESA said the satellite will eventually get much closer to the sun.
Now that it has completed its first pass, the spacecraft is slowly adjusting its orbit. In late 2021, it will get as close as 26 million miles from the sun’s surface — closer than the planet Mercury — to observe the first proper view of the star’s poles.
Scientists hope the mission can help answer some of their biggest questions about the development of planets, the emergence of life, the inner workings of our solar system and the origins of the universe and how it works.
The images aren’t the only new footage we have of the sun. In June, NASA released a 10-year time-lapse video of the star, captured by the agency’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO).
SDO gathered 425 million high-resolution images of the sun — 20 million gigabytes of data — over the course of a decade. It took a new picture of the sun every .75 seconds, leading to the spectacular composite video.
