Entrepreneur Sam Altman – founder of OpenAI, which developed the artificial intelligence program Chat GPT – is in talks with investors and chip manufacturers in the Middle East, including Taiwanese company TSMC, to launch a new chip technology company, according to the newspaper. Financial Times. Its goal is to control the semiconductor supply chain and reduce its dependence on Nvidia.

Altman has spoken to some of the region's wealthiest investors about financing the ambitious new venture to develop the chips needed to train and build artificial intelligence (AI) models and the factories needed to manufacture them, according to people with direct knowledge of the talks.

The 38-year-old businessman is in talks with investors from the United Arab Emirates, including Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan, one of the richest and most influential figures in Abu Dhabi, to finance the company. It is also in talks with Taiwanese chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (TSMC) to consider a chip manufacturing partnership.

After the epidemic, there was a very serious problem regarding the supply of microchips. Production and exports have slowed due to restrictions, but demand is growing without stopping, because more and more devices and machines are using this type of technology. These inefficiencies in supply chains have caused prices for semiconductor companies to skyrocket.

Sheikh Tahnoun is considered one of the most powerful men in the United Arab Emirates. He is the brother of the President of the Gulf state, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and is his national security advisor. He also oversees a rapidly expanding business empire and heads some of Abu Dhabi's most powerful government investment funds. These include the $800 billion Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the world's largest sovereign wealth funds, and ADQ, another government investment entity. He also chairs International Holding Company, a sprawling conglomerate that has quickly become the largest listed company in the UAE, and G42, an ambitious AI company that partners with Microsoft and OpenAI.
