Li arrived in Wellington in the morning after being invited by New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, with whom he will hold talks on bilateral, regional and global issues. In addition, it will participate in activities related to trade, agro-technology and education in the New Zealand capital and Auckland.

So far, no concrete details of Li’s agenda during his stay have been released. However, he is expected to be welcomed at the government headquarters and share dinner at the Prime Minister’s residence.

Outside the hotel in Wellington where the Chinese leader is staying, about two hundred people gathered with banners to welcome him, while a smaller group expressed their displeasure with China’s treatment of minorities.

Li’s visit, the first by a senior Chinese official since 2017, coincides with the 10th anniversary of the signing of the bilateral Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement. According to Prime Minister Christopher Lacson’s statement, the meeting is considered a valuable opportunity to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.

Despite ideological and geostrategic differences between China and New Zealand, New Zealand hopes Prime Minister Li’s visit will help boost exports to China, its main trading partner.

After his stay in New Zealand, Li plans to visit Australia and Malaysia as part of the tour, amid ongoing tensions with the Philippines over a thaw with Australia and territorial sovereignty in the South China Sea.
