According to Prime Minister Chris Hipkins, the clean car rebate has been successful in encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles in New Zealand. It has contributed significantly to the country’s climate goals. Since the program began in July 2021, 156,000 rebates have been offered to electric and hybrid vehicle customers, with a total of 150,000 milestones reached in September, the latest data reveals.
Thanks to the clean car rebate, electric vehicles now account for more than 50% of imported new and used vehicles registered in New Zealand. This increase in adoption has had a real impact on reducing emissions, with an average 33% reduction in emissions from newly registered vehicles from July 2021.
Transport Minister David Parker highlighted the success of the Clean Car Discount, with electric and hybrid vehicle registrations up by more than 53% in the period from July 2022 to June 2023, compared to just 39% in April 2022 to June 2023. Additionally, average carbon dioxide emissions from newly registered vehicles have reached an all-time low of 126 grams per kilometer from 188 grams per kilometer at the start of the program.
The Clean Car Rebate has been instrumental in moving towards a greener vehicle fleet in New Zealand. In contrast to the 30% decline in petrol and diesel vehicles, adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles has increased by a remarkable 180% year-on-year. The plan has had a transformative effect, especially since it was expanded to promote hybrids and discourage high-emission vehicles in April 2022.
According to a study by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Commission (EECA), 62% of electric vehicle owners bought their vehicles earlier than originally planned due to the clean car rebate. This indicates that the policy has a significant stimulatory effect on accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles.
The evidence is clear: the clean car rebate increases the number of electrified vehicles on the road and plays an important role in reducing emissions. It is an important policy tool for achieving New Zealand’s climate targets.
