The agreement, signed in Mexico City during an official visit by Murillo to the northern country, aims to establish guidelines for strategic cooperation that will allow the two countries to strengthen international cooperation with a focus on gender, according to a statement from Colombia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the content of the document, it seeks to prioritize key issues such as eliminating gender-based violence, ensuring sexual and reproductive rights, and access to health services, education, and income generation for women.
Foreign Minister Murillo stressed that the memorandum constitutes a vital act in establishing a foreign policy that defends life, peace and human rights for all people.
“With this agreement, we reaffirm our commitment to building a more just and equal society, at both the national and regional levels,” he said.
The source added that by signing the agreement, the two countries will exchange best practices and experiences in implementing feminist foreign policies, and will enhance public diplomacy initiatives to promote inclusive and gender-neutral communication in all bilateral and multilateral scenarios.
The letter concluded that the signing of this memorandum not only strengthens bilateral relations between Mexico and Colombia, but also establishes joint leadership in the region to confront the growing threats to women’s human rights.
The Colombian minister began a visit to Mexico on Friday to review several issues of common interest, including migration, peace, human rights, response to the climate emergency, energy transition, health and the fight against drug trafficking, among others.
As part of his agenda, Murillo inaugurated the new Victim Care Room in Mexico City, a space designed to provide protection and comprehensive support to Colombians in the Aztec nation who are in difficult situations, he said.
