Costa Rica at a coordinators meeting in Mexico heading to the CELAC summit

In Mexico City, the Costa Rican delegation participated in the fiftieth meeting of coordinators, which also discussed the texts of the declarations that the leaders will sign at the summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

For the event in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Costa Rica also proposed addressing issues such as climate change, disaster mitigation and transnational organized crime.

A statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that the delegation stressed the need to ensure and strengthen democratic processes in the region, highlighting the great challenges it currently faces and their future impact on the development of Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Costa Rica delegation consisted of Ambassador Gina Guillén Grillo, Director General of Foreign Policy, and Minister Counselor Antonio Alarcón, Head of the Department of International Organizations.

Ambassador Guillén highlighted the important role played by the CELAC community in shaping dialogues with partners outside the region, such as the European Union and China, and the importance of strengthening the agreements reached during the CELAC-EU summit in July 2023, especially within the framework of initiatives. During the meeting, options were also discussed to clarify CELAC's agenda with some G20 activities during the Brazilian presidency.

The delegations gathered in Mexico City also analyzed the regional situation in areas such as health, education, science, technology, innovation, energy transition and space cooperation, among others.

The Costa Rican delegation held bilateral meetings with the delegations of Argentina, Chile, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to discuss the regional integration strategy in political dialogue and coordination forums on the continent.

He promoted to all members the region's participation in the High-Level Event on Ocean Action: Engaged in Change, to be held in San Jose next June.

CELAC is a regional coordination and integration mechanism established on December 3, 2011, with the aim of promoting political, economic, social and cultural unity and integration, in a comprehensive and cooperative perspective, focusing on areas of common interest.
