D-backs extend general manager Mike Hazen’s contract

Must Read

After one day Win the first game of the Wild Card series Against the Brewers, the D-backs have extended general manager Mike Hazen’s contract, a source told MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert on Wednesday.

The club did not confirm the agreement.

Hazen’s new contract runs through at least the 2028 season, with an option for 2029. He joined the D-backs’ front office in 2016 after spending one season as general manager of the Red Sox. He spent 11 years with Boston, after starting his career with Cleveland.

The D-backs qualified for the postseason in his first year at the helm in 2017. They beat the Rockies in that year’s Wild Card Game before being swept by the Dodgers in the NLDS. They then missed the playoffs from 2018 to 2022, with the team reaching its lowest point in 2021 with a record of 52-110.

During that period, Hazen built the team through the draft, acquiring outfielders Corbin Carroll and Alec Thomas and pitcher Brandon Pvadt. Before the start of this year, Hazen gave Carroll an eight-year, $111 million extension.

He also made moves on the trade market, acquiring pitcher Zach Gallen, Dominican second baseman Ketel Marte, and Venezuelan catcher Gabriel Moreno.
