Bolivia's vice president warns of coup plots

Ethiopia affirms its commitment to protecting and empowering women

According to a message from the Government Communication Department, the federal authorities will continue to implement programs and strategies with the aim of avoiding, confronting and punishing any assault on the civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights of Ethiopian women.

As a party to international agreements to achieve gender equality, Ethiopia has taken an important step in designing and implementing policies that promote women’s rights and empowerment, she says.

He asserts that, so far, we have achieved sustainable milestones such as gender participation in children’s enrollment in primary education and verification of women’s property rights through civil law reform.

She explained that Ethiopia is one of the few countries in the world that has a female head of state and many ministerial portfolios, in addition to the Federal Supreme Court, are headed by women.

It also affirms that “the government is committed to addressing all sexual and gender-based violations that resulted during the recent armed confrontation between the federal army and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front.”

In this sense, it indicates that an interministerial working group has been established to investigate and bring to justice perpetrators of human rights and humanitarian law violations in three regional countries.

She said the recently signed peace agreement with the TPLF will also be important in creating a transitional justice system that addresses the specific needs of women and girls.

In addition, the government urges “all friends and partners of Ethiopia to unite to encourage implementation of the agreement, which will create a better situation for women in conflict-affected areas.”
