Ethiopian Airlines resumes flights to the northern Ethiopian city

Addis Ababa, December 28 (Prensa Latina) Today, Ethiopian Airlines resumes its regular flight from the capital to Mekelle, the main city of Tigray, a state in northern Ethiopia.

Operations for this route will begin with departure on Wednesday at 12:00 local time, arrival at 1:25 pm, airline communication required.

Mesfin Tasso, executive director of the state-owned company, told a press conference that the restart will contribute to the peace agreement between the government and the TPLF, as it will improve communication and trust between citizens.

He stressed that this would bring social and economic benefits, and announced that “the number of daily trips will gradually increase.”

This, he insisted, would allow families to come together and also facilitate the transportation of very essential goods such as medicine, food and many other relief items.

One of the points of the agreement with the Front, signed on November 2 in Pretoria, South Africa, is to guarantee access to Tigray to facilitate family reunification and humanitarian aid.

At the end of last month, the company reported that it was preparing to restore flights that were suspended after the war between the government and the TPLF (English abbreviation), which began in November 2020.

He then noted that “there were several daily flights to that area before the armed conflict,” but he did not specify when they would resume, nor departure times and appointments.

He explained, however, that the airports of Mikkeli and Shire are already able to receive passengers steadily.
