Luxembourg, June 20. The Council of the European Union (EU) on Monday approved a resolution concluding a partnership and cooperation agreement with New Zealand, which will pave the way for the community to implement the agreement by the end of July.

The agreement provides a global framework for “highly effective bilateral engagement” between the EU, its member states and New Zealand, and provides close cooperation in various fields, the Council said in a statement.

In these areas, he highlighted human rights, prevention of the spread of weapons of mass destruction, the fight against terrorism, cooperation in economic and business matters, health, the environment, climate change, energy, education or culture.

Also work, disaster risk management, fisheries and maritime affairs, transportation, legal cooperation and the fight against money laundering, financing of terrorism, organized crime and corruption.

In April 2016, the European Commission submitted a proposal to the Council for the signing and temporary application of the Association Agreement with New Zealand, which was signed in Brussels in October of that year.

A month later, the Commission proposed to the Council the conclusion of a union agreement and the European Parliament gave its assent, while the Member States’ approval process ended last May.

The decision to terminate the Association Agreement shall come into force today, that is, on the date of its acceptance, and on the thirtieth day after the parties have notified each other of the respective decision. Legal procedures, explained the Council. EFE
