The Mexican Football Federation’s appeal did not proceed, and FIFA confirmed the sanction imposed by the homophobic cries heard during the matches against Canada and Honduras in the World Cup qualifying round bound for Qatar 2022.
The national team will have to play two matches behind closed doors and cover the fine that has been imposed, this was confirmed by FIFA to CANCHA.
“With regard to the sanction imposed on the Mexican Football Federation by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee for anti-gay chants by Mexican fans during the World Cup qualifying matches against Canada and Honduras, the FIFA Appeal Committee decided to confirm a decision referred to the entire FIFA Disciplinary Committee (fine amount of 100,000 Swiss francs and an order to play their next two matches at home behind closed doors).
Tricolor will have to play without an audience their matches against Costa Rica and Panama at the Azteca Stadium, for the World Cup qualifiers.
In June of this year, the FMF was also fined two matches of penalties and a fine of more than one million pesos, and only on that occasion did they appeal the penalty and the penalty was reduced to a VETO match.
FIFA has reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy for homophobic shouting and any other behavior of this nature.
Despite repeated campaigns by the Mexican Football Federation and Liga BBVA, it was not possible to eradicate this behavior on the part of Mexican fans.
Yon de Luisa, the president of the federation, said weeks ago that he was not considering taking El Tre out of the Azteca stadium.
