Dunedin police in New Zealand on Monday stabbed five people in a supermarket in the city center with a man armed with two knives, after which he was arrested.

The incident occurred at around 2:30 a.m. local time, when three people were seriously injured and two others sustained minor injuries as they entered a store on the Countdown Network and attacked visitors and company employees.
Police said several passers-by stormed the occupant and kept him motionless until agents arrived. In addition, he noted that three of the injured were in the intensive care unit, another in the general ward and a fifth discharged.
The first calls to emergency services came just before 2.30pm today, with a large number of people being stabbed inside the Countdown supermarket on Cumberland Street in central Dunedin.

Agent Paul Basham told local media that although a full investigation into what happened had begun, the attack was probably accidental.
In this regard, the country’s Prime Minister Jacinta Artern commented that it is not currently known whether the incident was related to an act of terrorism.
Police are responding to an incident in central Dunedin.
It happened at 2.30pm in Cumberland St.
Initial reports said several people were injured.
One person has been arrested.

According to the press, the incident is unusual for New Zealand, which is considered a peaceful country. Locals were shocked when an armed white supremacist killed 51 Muslim worshipers at a mosque in March 2019.
The perpetrator of the attack, Australian Brendan Tarant, was sentenced to life without parole.
