Both China and New Zealand have been affected by heavy rain since last night till today (18.08.2022). In China, 16 people have died and another 36 people are reported missing due to flash floods in Qinghai province of northern China. While in New Zealand, more than three hundred families were evacuated in the South Island, leading to the declaration of a state of emergency in some towns.
It started to rain last night in the mountainous area of Datong County, which is located in the northern part of the Municipal District of Jining, the capital of Qinghai in China. Shortly after, officials declared a Level 2 emergency, the second highest of four divisions by China’s flood warning system. Since the beginning of summer, floods in provinces such as Hunan, Sichuan and Gansu have killed dozens and displaced more than a million homes.
For its part, New Zealand has been hit by a powerful storm that is affecting the north and west coast of the South Island and other areas such as Nelson, where the Mathai River is already overflowing its banks.
New Zealand officials expected 100 to 140 millimeters of rain in the country’s northernmost region of Northland, including the flooding of its Kayo River, according to the MetService, the country’s meteorological service.
