Paris, October 19 (Prensa Latina) The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed today its regret at the failure of the UN Security Council, due to the US veto, in a draft resolution focusing on the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.
In its daily press release, the Quai d’Orsay made no secret that it hoped the body of 15 member states would adopt the initiative presented by Brazil in New York, “because we wanted the international community to be able to express itself in one way.” The sound based on this text seemed to us measured.
After Hamas’ deadly attack on Israeli territory on October 7, Tel Aviv began indiscriminate bombing of Gaza and imposed a complete blockade on it, in addition to issuing orders to evacuate hundreds of thousands of civilians in that densely populated area, claiming that it was a prelude to a ground offensive. . .
The draft resolution calls for canceling the order imposed by Israel on civilians and United Nations employees to leave the areas it plans to attack under the pretext of eliminating Hamas.
It also called for humanitarian pauses to allow aid to enter the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where they lack food, water, and electricity, and encouraged the establishment of humanitarian corridors.
In the Council, 12 countries approved the text, but the United States vetoed it, and because it was one of the five powers with this privilege, the initiative automatically failed.
According to France, another country with controversial veto power, the project met its expectations, in particular because of the “unequivocal condemnation of the terrorist attacks launched by Hamas, the need to implement international humanitarian law (…) and to respond to the terrorist attacks launched by Hamas.” The basic demands of the residents of Gaza and from a political perspective (…).”
For Washington, the document was withheld because it does not reflect Israel’s right to defend itself.
