The Puerto Rico Baseball Federation (FBPR) announced Monday that Francisco Lindor He would be the captain of the Puerto Rican baseball team in the World Classic.
FBPR celebrated on its Twitter account: “We have a new captain!”
And the team manager, Yadier Molina, indicated at Luis Muñoz Marin Airport before leaving for Miami, that the decision came at the request of the team players: “The players chose that,” according to local media.
Lindor was one of Puerto Rico’s captains in the past classic and one of the veteran players in this edition of the World Cup.
“We are ready, ready, focused and hopefully healthy to complete the target,” Molina added.
Lindor and the national team held a meeting Monday for the first time at a hotel in Fort Myers, with Molina, part of the coaching staff and members of the FFA.
The team will hold its first group practice this Tuesday. “Tomorrow, before practice, we have a meeting with the guys. The basics are mentioned there, in terms of getting to know you a little bit more on this side of the coach. A lot of people know me, but there are others who don’t,” Molina said.
Puerto Rico’s governor, Pedro Purluizi, left with the foreign minister, Omar Marrero, and the director of the tourism company, Carlos Mercado, on the same flight as the players.
“We are pursuing our goal, which is to reach the gold medal that everyone wants. It was a difficult job. Many people thought it was easy. We had to fight. In honor of the homeland, we will represent it with dignity,” declared the federation president.
Although the tournament will start on March 8 with the teams that will play the key in the Asian continent, Puerto Rico, which is part of Group D and is based in Miami, Florida, will do so on the eleventh day against Nicaragua, in a region where it is located. Also the Dominican Republic, Venezuela and Israel.
