Cincinnati signed Montas to a one-year, $16 million deal and hopes his surgically repaired shoulder will allow him to impact a starting rotation that includes young pitchers like Hunter Greene, who will start Game 2.
Montas started the season opener for the Oakland Athletics in 2020 and 2022, but was limited to one appearance last year with the New York Yankees. After recovering from shoulder surgery in February of last year, Montas tossed 26 pitches in 1 1/3 innings in a win over the Kansas City Royals on the final weekend of the regular season.
