Bidu Ram Bhosale, Minister of Agricultural Development and Livestock of Nepal, spoke at the G77-China summit on behalf of the least developed countries and stressed that Cuba reflects and expresses the sentiments of the G77 and China.
Commenting on the position of the least developed countries, the Minister emphasized that science, technology and innovation are fundamental pillars of development.
He stressed that economic transformation can be achieved by enhancing productive capabilities through the use of science, especially in areas such as health and education, through the application of scientific and technical innovations.
Furthermore, he stressed that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are vital and can only be achieved through joint efforts, including advances in telecommunications and information and communications technologies (ICT).
Bhosal noted that problems remain if technology is not used appropriately to achieve development goals, and that countries of the Global South must strive to master these technologies.
He stated that the technological gap represents a challenge that affects them and that their actions must provide them with the necessary capabilities to reduce it.
In this sense, he highlighted that the countries of the South have achieved great progress in the field of technology, but with unity and cooperation they will be able to advance further.
He stressed the importance of creating a system for innovation and developing special knowledge, based on what the countries of the South can produce after the pandemic.
The Minister stressed the need to develop new strategies to achieve scientific and technical progress, as well as strengthening science-based education. He also called for promoting large-scale technology transfers and reducing inequality between developed and underdeveloped countries. In addition, he called for reforming the international financial system and obtaining more resources and investments.
Bhosal stressed the need to enhance the effective transfer of technology from developed countries, which has not been sufficient so far despite the promises made. He considered that the Group of 77 and China must strengthen the reduction of the digital divide to encourage increased use of the Internet.
