During his participation in major events, the UN Secretary-General will emphasize the essential role played by the Non-Aligned Movement, the Group of 77 and China in strengthening international cooperation.
At a time of deep division and heightened geopolitical tensions, his messages will focus on supporting multilateralism, renewed efforts for peace, financing sustainable development and climate action, as well as reforms of global institutions.
At the same time, he will urge governments to consider his proposal for a new peace agenda, a plan prepared by Guterres himself to achieve this desired goal.
According to his agenda in Kampala, the UN Secretary-General plans to hold bilateral meetings with several summit participants, and will also meet with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.
The Non-Aligned Movement meeting began on Monday with preparatory conferences for the Meeting of Heads of State and Government and a call for unity and greater cooperation among the countries that comprise it.
Ministerial meetings were held on Wednesday and Thursday, while the high-level summit will begin on Friday and conclude on Saturday.
The Non-Aligned Movement consists of 120 countries: 53 from Africa, 39 from Asia, 26 from Latin America and the Caribbean and two from Europe. While 17 countries have observer status.
The Group of 77 and China, for its part, consists of 134 members and is considered the largest and most diverse group in the multilateral field.
During 2023, the coalition is chaired by Cuba, which this weekend will hand over leadership to the host country.
