Building on its significant growth in recent decades, Colombia has established itself as a historic third power in South America at the Olympic Games, adding 34 medals, including 5 golds.
Since its debut in Los Angeles in 1932, a little later than other countries in the region, the coffee delegation barely missed the Helsinki 1952 edition, but to reach the podium it had to wait until Munich 1972, along with shooting and boxing.
However, winning medals has been essential since Sydney 2000, the edition in which María Isabel Urrutia won her first national gold medal. From there, Colombia has improved its performance edition after edition, adding nine medals at London 2012, eight at Rio 2016 (with three golds, her record) and five at Tokyo 2020.
Mariana Pajón, a BMX specialist, is the country’s top medalist, with two golds and one silver, but the sport that brought the delegation the most medals was weightlifting, with nine, on top of the eight in cycling, the five each in athletics and boxing. Two each from shooting, judo, wrestling and the only one from taekwondo, highlighting the strength and combat sports in national history.
