“Congratulations @drpezeshkian on your election as President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. We look forward to working closely with you to further strengthen our warm and long-standing bilateral relationship for the benefit of our peoples and the region.
A day earlier, the official representative of the Islamic Republic’s electoral headquarters, Mohsen Eslami, announced the victory of the reformist former health minister, Masoud Pezeshkian, in the Iranian presidential elections.
According to the results released, out of 30 million and 530 thousand votes, Pezeshkian received 16 million and 384 thousand votes, which represents at least 53.6 percent of the total.
Governor Saeed Jalili, the spokesman for the Supreme Leader in the country’s Security Council, received 13,538,000 votes, equivalent to 44.3 percent of the total.
According to official figures, voter turnout was 49.8 percent, nearly half of Iran’s 61 million eligible voters.
The authorities indicated that the turnout in the first round of the presidential elections was about 40 percent, the lowest in the country’s history.
On July 5, Iran held the second round of extraordinary presidential elections, called after then-President Ebrahim Raisi died when the helicopter he was in with eight others crashed on May 19 in Iran’s eastern province of Azerbaijan.
