Jim Denevan opens a massive sand facility in Abu Dhabi
“Similar Self,” a sprawling, immersive landscape artwork created by Jim Denevan, appeared first on Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, as part of a city-wide exhibition. Curated by Reem Fadda, Director of Cultural Programs at the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation, and Alia Zaal Lootah, this city-wide exhibition displays 35 different works of art by local and international artists. The exhibition is scheduled to run until January 30, 2024, and is a diverse collection that seeks to engage the public.
The facility occupies a large portion of Al Fahd Island, extending over an area of approximately one square kilometre. The temporary structure consists of 10 concentric rings comprising 448 pyramids and mounds, forming a complex mandala pattern. Originating from a circle drawn in the sand with a stick, this artwork seeks to balance grandeur and impermanence, demonstrating the duality of its monumental nature.
Visitors are encouraged to immerse themselves in the installation structure and climb two observation hills for a 360-degree panoramic view of the composition and surrounding natural environment, providing a unique interactive experience. Located in the center, viewers can enjoy the geometric symmetry while contemplating the ephemerality of nature and connection to the natural world. Its shifting form embraces the inherent vulnerability of its material and design, demonstrating a constant state of change.
The installation is part of a large city-wide exhibition Abu Dhabi, Following the main theme of “Ground Light”. The theme developed by the curators invites visitors to embark on a physical and psychological journey, revealing our relationship and interaction with the world around us. By exploring volume, boundaries and light, all works explore notions of similarity and diversity simultaneously.
Dennevan’s entire installation transforms at night, unfolding when more than a thousand solar lights are turned on. In addition to illuminating the city’s surroundings and creating complex shadows, the sand volumes seek to express uniform warmth.
