Phoenix – Arizona Diamondbacks player Lourdes Gurriel Jr. He was not in the starting lineup against the Miami Marlins due to arriving in the park late.
But the 29-year-old had a good excuse. He became a US citizen.
“It’s a great achievement for him,” Diamondbacks manager Tori Lovolo said. I am definitely proud of him. We have exempted him from pre-match activities until he can fix that.”
Lovolo noted that Gurrell would be benched against the Marlins.
Gurriel was born in Cuba and defected to the United States along with his brother Yuli in 2016. Both have had successful MLB careers since arriving in the country.
Yuli Guryel was in town for a special moment for her brother because he’s a Marlins player. He had several successful seasons with the Astros before signing with Miami in the off-season. He was third in the Marlins’ standings on Monday.
Lourdes Gurriel played his first five seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays before coming on to D linebacker on an off-season trade. 310 batting average, five home runs, and 19 RBIs in 30 games.
