Every December 31st, as midnight approaches, the exchange of calls and messages with your loved ones breaks down more and more. No one wants to remain without wishing prosperity, health and good luck to his closest circle, and even less so during these years when the celebrations are a bit strange and farther from the celebrations of other years.
So I will not be less, especially after the health crisis that we have experienced in recent years. That is why I wanted to offer you this article, so that this year health will not be just a wish.
More and more of you are concerned about your physical and mental health, and in counseling you are frequently asking me what habits you can incorporate for better health.
Since I couldn’t be happier about it, today I give you some tips to implement:
- Include good eating habits in your routine
Having good eating habits doesn’t even mean ‘going on a diet’. It is about having a healthy diet according to our schedules, tastes and personal condition where whole grains, legumes, vegetables and fruits predominate, as they are excellent sources of protein, fiber, minerals and vitamins.
- Don’t forget to drink water
Water is an essential element for the proper functioning of our bodies, as all cells, tissues and organs depend on it.
It’s true that everyone has their own requirements according to their body composition and lifestyle, but the recommendation to drink between 1.5 liters and 2 liters per day can serve as a guide to ensuring good hydration.
- Avoid bad habits like alcohol and tobacco
Consumption of substances such as alcohol and tobacco has become so normalized in our society that sometimes we forget how harmful it can be.
Any toxic substance we consume, our immune system processes it as such and responds with general inflammation which when repeated constantly can be very harmful to our health.
- Include physical activity in your routine
It doesn’t matter if you don’t do moderate or high-intensity physical activity, the important thing is to get our muscles moving and energized.
An active life contributes to better bone, muscle, heart and respiratory health. It also helps us reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and various types of cancer among many other diseases.
Many times we try to achieve everything by underestimating the importance of rest and as a result we end up harming our health and having to stop by force.
It is essential to respect rest times and maintain good sleep hygiene. So trying to maintain regular schedules and avoiding screens at bedtime can be a good New Year’s fix if you haven’t already.
- Try to make habit changes progressive and not look for immediate results
Try to visualize change as a long way to go towards a healthy life, surely there are days when you find yourself with more or less difficulties. Pursuing our goals overnight will only make us go back to the starting point or even turn back after a few weeks.
Without mental health, there is no health. Allow yourself to pause when necessary, rest and prioritize asking for help if you need it.
Just as we go to the doctor when we feel some discomfort, it is important that we go to a mental health professional when we feel tired, irritable, when our stress levels are very high, or when we feel any emotion that we don’t know how to manage.
Without further ado, I wish you a year 2023 filled with love, health and prosperity.
