New double challenge. World No. 6 Daniil Medvedev, the ATP number one, is the player in top form and faces a particular challenge, twice, at the impending Masters 1000 in Indian Wells and Miami. The Russian was unable to reach the semi-finals in both and is the man to win.
Medvedev was the executioner of Novak Djokovic, currently world number one, in the semi-finals in Dubai, thus snapping his 20-match unbeaten streak, with 15 on the year, plus not knowing defeat four months later. The Russian comes from winning three titles in 13 days and maintaining a streak of 14 consecutive matches without a loss, so he will be looked at in a special way in each of the M1000s in the United States.
His success at the ATP 500 in Dubai was the 18th title of his career, with the fact that he won 18 different tournaments, something not achieved on the Champions Tour top 10 during his first 18 successes.
Undoubtedly, Medvedev has been identified as a favorite in the California desert and Miami, with the addition that Djokovic will not be able to play, because due to his lack of vaccination against Covid he will not be able to enter American soil.
The Russian also arrives knowing that if he achieves very good results he will be able to continue to regain ground in the standings, as he left the top 10, now number 6 and has already admitted after his culmination in Dubai: “I am very clear that if I fall in Indian Wells I will feel Confidence disappears completely.
Likewise, it will be necessary to see, if he loses, in which round he will do so. So far, Medvedev has not been able to reach the quarterfinals in Indian Wells. He participated there five times and only in 2021 did he reach the round of 16. Meanwhile, he has performed in Miami just four times, falling short in the quarterfinals in 2021 and 2022.
So, with little you can actually beat those offers. Hard courts are his favorite, and in fact, 17 of his 18 titles have been won on this surface. At the other Masters 1000 in the United States, in Cincinnati, before the US Open, he has already celebrated once, in 2019. For this reason, the challenge is very special.
