According to the head of that state in Congress, Ivan Cepeda, the municipalities have been prioritized in the emergency plan presented by human rights platforms and social organizations last Friday to the country’s president, Gustavo Petro.
The plan includes 29 urgent actions to protect these residents, and according to Cepeda, the purpose of the tour will be to serve rural municipalities facing the most serious situations of violence in the country.
Also, the provisions adopted by Petro and the government must be adhered to in this case.
“We will establish with the authorities and civil society in these municipalities protection measures for these residents, as well as humanitarian measures in their lands,” Cepeda declared.
He explained that the visits will be distributed to the 45 members of Congress who make up the aforementioned committee, who, together with the authorities, will evaluate the measures taken by the public force to prevent the aforementioned attacks and protect social leaders.
In addition, they will seek to promote humanitarian initiatives that contribute to alleviating armed conflict and violence in these areas.
The session also approved the inclusion of the cities of Cali and Barrancabermeja in priority areas, in addition to providing support and follow-up to members of the public force who, in recent events, were victims of the armed conflict.
According to We Are Defenders, in 2021, 996 attacks on social leadership were recorded, including 139 murders, 665 threats, and 93 assaults.
For its part, the Institute for Development and Peace Studies, as of July 2022, records 102 murders of defenders and 26 locations, 337 since the signing of the final peace agreement.
