Meridian Energy sees hydrogen storage scale up in New Zealand

Must Read

New Zealand-based hydropower company Meridian Energy reported an increase in hydrogen storage between September and October. Storage levels have increased as power demand has decreased during this period.

From September to October 5, national hydropower storage reached 116% of historic levels, up from 83% previously. This indicates a significant increase in the availability of hydroelectric power available for use.

September was New Zealand’s hottest month on record, with national electricity demand down 1.7% compared to the same period last year.

This increase in hydrogen storage capacity demonstrates the effectiveness of hydropower generation as a reliable and sustainable energy source. By storing excess electricity in the form of hydrogen, Meridian Energy can better manage fluctuations in demand and ensure a continuous supply of energy to consumers.

Hydrogen storage plays an important role in the overall efficiency and sustainability of the power grid. This allows surplus electricity to be stored during periods of low demand and then converted back into electricity when needed. This flexibility ensures reliable energy supply and reduces dependence on non-renewable energy sources.

Overall, Meridian Energy’s increase in hydrogen storage levels reflects the company’s commitment to providing sustainable and efficient energy solutions. By harnessing the power of hydropower and effectively managing fluctuations in demand, they contribute to New Zealand’s green, reliable energy future.
