Mexico coach Gerardo Martino has played down the fact that he has lost three CONCACAF Classics to the United States in recent months, and is focusing only on regaining ground in qualifying for Qatar 2022.
Tre lost 2-0 at TQL Stadium, a loss that added to their loss to the Americans in the CONCACAF Nations League and Gold Cup Finals last summer.
“It’s not a question of losing three games to the United States, the situation is to continue to recover in the playoffs, it’s not a personal confrontation against the United States,” Martino said after the video match.
“I understand the importance of being a Clasico, after three defeats against an opponent that all Mexicans want to lose, but what we have to worry about the most is the redirection of the liquidation.”
Tata lamented that his choice of sequel lost the sharpness.
He said, “The match witnessed changing moments, and we were the first team we had to achieve in the first half with clear chances, and the control was shared and what I feel is that in the second half we reduced it a little.”
“When we equalized the intensity in the first half, we had options and we were better, and when we reduced the intensity, they were effective and after scoring the goal they started managing the game more calmly.”
Martino denied that the defense is an Achilles heel.
“The truth is that we played six games and had three goals in our net, and I don’t think we had defensive problems, it is true that the United States scored two goals,” he added.
“But it’s also true that in the first season we didn’t struggle with scoring options and we were playing with a defender who didn’t play together, and I don’t think it was our Achilles heel throughout the play-off.”
