WASHINGTON, DC — Former Vice President Mike Pence plans to announce his candidacy for the 2024 election on June 7 during an event in Des Moines, Iowa, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke to NBC News.
The former vice president, a longtime advocate of traditional conservative priorities on social and economic issues, will join the race as his former boss, former President Donald Trump, claims a majority in several national polls. And Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is the obvious second chair.
Reintroducing himself to Republican voters, most of whom know him primarily as Trump’s vice president, will be difficult.
But Pence, who grew up in Indiana, sees his fellow Midwesterners in the Iowa Republican Party, and their first-ever caucuses in the country, as a hospitable home for his political brand. The Iowa caucuses usually play a selection role in a nomination battle, providing rocket fuel to a few candidates while burying the hopes of the rest.
