MILWAUKEE — Garrett Mitchell doubled, walked twice and scored in his first major league game since April, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-0 on Thursday.
Corbin Burns, Colombian Julio Tiheran (3-5) and Ethan Small combined for a six-hit effort for the Brewers, the National League Central Division champions. Burns struck out four and walked one in four innings in what was his final attempt in the playoffs.
He threw 66 pitches, including 39 strikeouts.
The Brewers reactivated Mitchell, who was on the 60-day disabled list. The 24-year-old, a first-round pick in the 2020 draft, injured his left shoulder sliding into third base on April 18.
The following month, he underwent surgery to repair the torn labrum. It was thought at the time that he would hardly return in the present campaign.
The third inning opened with a double on the first pitch from Dakota Hudson (6-3) of the inning. Christian Yelich then hit an RBI single to make it 2-0.
For the Cardinals, Venezuelan Juan Yepez won 4-1, and Juniel Quircuto 3-1.
For the Brewers, Venezuelan William Contreras went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Dominican Carlos Santana 4-1 with one goal, Willie Adams 4-0. Mexican Rudy Tellez 3-1.
