Yaruquí Hospital, located northeast of Quito, was the venue for the Integrated Health Services Networks (RISS) demonstration workshop. The purpose of the initiative, promoted by the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) is to ensure the provision of more accessible, equitable, efficient and quality health services, better meeting the expectations of the population.

Oscar Parenchi, representative of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO / WHO) in Ecuador, said that in countries with a network of first-level care services, they are the ones who have been able to respond to the needs presented by COVID-19.. “We have committed to support these initiatives and managing resources to provide technical cooperation.

The project addresses the problem of fragmentation of health services and seeks to respond to the need to move towards the production and delivery of comprehensive health care to all residents of a country, in accordance with the various commitments and mandates.

Carmen Guerrero, Deputy Minister of Universal Health Care, explained that work is underway to unite four micro-networks specializing in: mental health, maternal and newborn care, malnutrition, chronic non-communicable diseases and oncology.

In addition, he noted, “the entire Tier 1 team, hospitals, and District 9 Coordination – Health have worked to reinvigorate the networks, with a stronger and more consistent structure.”

This government portfolio promotes comprehensive care and access to quality services targeting the entire population of Ecuador.
